Saturn Return — What is it?

The Saturn Return is an astrological occurrence that usually occurs twice in a natural life span.  It takes Saturn 30 years to make the complete circle of your chart.  The planet Saturn, the stern taskmaster, returns to the place it was when you were born twice for most people. It will return three times if you’re very lucky.  The first time, it returns is when you are between 28 and 30 years of age.  Saturn returns once again when you are between the ages of 58 and 60.  If you are fortunate enough to live 90 years, you will see it again between the ages of 88 and 90.

The Saturn Return lasts about two years and is a time for introspection and self-evaluation. It is a time of taking responsibility and often a time for making serious choices.

The First and Second Saturn Return

On this site, we will examine the details of the First and the Second Saturn Return.

The arrival of the first Return underscores one of the pivotal times in your life. It’s more than just a change of the first digit of your age. More profoundly, it’s a time for some deep self-assessment. You can read more about the First Saturn Return in another post — click here to read about the First Saturn Return. The second pivotal period in your life, astrologically speaking, is the advent of the Second Saturn Return. This is a very important time. 1. Hi, I’m trying to use your Saturn return calculator but there are no birth dates for December 30, 1957. Actually there are no dates for 1957 at all. Also, I went to use the complimentary Saturn Return reading to get what this Second return is about because I’m almost through my second return and I can only hope you can tell me because I didn’t get it right the first time…I haven’t gotten it right at this point and I’m really getting hit hard BUT I want to get it right right now!!! Please help. I was able to bring up the page to get the free reading but I accidently “X” out. Now it won’t let me bring that page up again. Please help!

  2. my date of birth 15/1/1971 at 10:30pm
i got big problem of making home since 8 years and just finished house warming ceremony. during the 8 years i lost my brothers parents cooperation and helping and more over, i got big vengeance of no reason from them. B4 house construction, my whole family liked me and when i started my house construction all are my enemies.

Now i understand it is Saturn return again??
    what to do??

    • Hi, I’m sorry I can’t understand exactly what is going on, but it seems like you have a new home and should be enjoying it. You are not having your Saturn return now if you were born in 1971. You have Saturn in Taurus. You’ll need to get a chart done to find the house placement, but Saturn in Taurus in and of itself would not indicate problems either with family or home necessarily, just perhaps with resources. Why are they mad about the house? Are they jealous?

      • Dear Celestina,

Can you give me a brief description of my astro sign. I thought my sign is Capricorn. Now i understand that i have Taurus in Saturn!!

        Saud

        • I think you may be confusing the sun sign and Saturn sign? You could be “a Capricorn” (sun in Capricorn) and have Saturn in any sign, including Taurus. I’m working on the Saturn in Taurus write up. It will be ready before the end of summer.

  4. Hi Celestina! I was wondering if there was any information about Saturn in Pisces? I’m very curious about it as it is isolated in my chart. I have a significantly left-handed chart with the exception of my Saturn in Pisces in the 7th house. As well as Neptune & Uranus. (I’m a Leo Sun & Moon with Virgo Rising)
I’m very curious about this Saturn placement as it has been considered by some to be a bit laborious in nature. I’ve felt it most in my relationships with others. I’m often incredibly misunderstood, and I’ve also managed to get myself in a lot of trouble taking the blame or going up in flames with people or causes that really triggered my heartstrings. Perhaps a product of being so misunderstood and outcasted in social circles in my upbringing. I was definitely labeled as a weirdo with very outlandish ideas and perspectives that I’ve learned to embrace in my 20’s now. I’m currently 21 and taking advantage of this cancer season to be very introspective about my personal strengths and weaknesses and how to maximize their potentials for my upcoming year.
I admit I was a little scared to see it wasn’t posted as I immediately thought that it was a doomed position to have in one’s chart. lol
    Anyway,
I look forward to your response!

    • I’ll be working on Saturn in Pisces this summer and hope to post it soon. I think all Saturn placements are hard, frankly, but my vote for most painful would be Saturn in Cancer, so you may take some schadenfreude there. It sounds like the house placement troubles you more than the sign, though. Having Neptune and Uranus in the 7th house makes for a triple whammy there, I think. Saturn in Pisces is not a doomed position. 1/12th of people have it 🙂

  6. Wow! This article was very well written and detailed. I’m just entering my first Saturn return and I’m definitely feeling the effects of it. I have Saturn (in retrograde) and Uranus in Sag in the second house. Hopefully my second time around will be better.

I am 60 but I think I have a Saturn return in December this year, any chance you could give me some advice? I am one of the ‘waiting to die’ because I really cannot see anything else…

  8. Great site with interesting articles on both Saturn returns and the nodes (I’m experiencing my second Saturn in Sag return and I’m a north node Libra (conj DC and Neptune)) but the mother of my son has Saturn in Pisces and it appears that you’ve not yet completed the work on this and a couple of other signs so was wondering if you have plans to do so?

  10. Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for your insights on saturn in sagittarius! What a wonderful read, and so much food for thought! I also really appreciate the references to historical figures of note, so that I can research their lives and challenges further! Thank you! Have a great day!

  11. Saturn in Pisces? Almost time for second return. First one, 1993-1994, were indeed monumental. A time of to stop being afraid, to have faith in ones abilities and take that huge step into the territory of the unknown. (Fear of the Unknown can be a debilitating factor in your life). A relationship with “The world of the Unknown”, seemed like nothing compared to a relationship in the world of “The psychotic emotional blackmailer”. Add “gay” to this, (a rough time to be openly gay) and you have a challenging recipe begging to flop in the absence of Free Will.

Best move of my life, best decision of my life, best new direction for my life, and by far BEST courage ever-ever and ever.

  13. During my first Saturn return I was misdiagnosed with cancer, divorced my first husband, moved to Santa Fe from Arkansas to pursue meeting my “gurus” and then on to Los Angeles to try a career in stand up comedy. All was well then I got pregnant at 36 with my only child. He’s now 21. But I moved back to AR to raise him. Now I feel restless and like my plans were interrupted with him. I was never all that happy about it. Sounds awful but it’s how I feel. So now I’m feeling I need to get out of here or I don’t want to finish my life here but I’m more scared then I was at 28. I also have a number of animals and own a house so that’s sort of a security blanket. I also own a business. I’m a Libra so decisions are hard for me. HELP!

  14. Thank you so much for this Saturn Return analysis. It, along with your post about North Node in Aries, has given me much clarity and inspiration.

  15. I just read your Saturn Return in Capricorn because I’m 27 going on 28 this month. Thank you for this analysis! I think I really needed this advice at this point in my life.

  18. Hi Celestina! I believe I am going through the peak of my SR. I was born October 28th, 1988 at 12noon. I have literally had the most difficult problems come into my life that have not existed before. I ended a very long term relationship in which was very heartbreaking, I got involved with a shady producer that was trying to bring me down. I rebounded to another relationship because I was feeling so heartbroken, and that guy ended up trying to hack into my accounts, invade my work contacts, and invade my personal life after I broke it off with him. My work life has been very disappointing in real estate in the past 6 months by not making as many sales, and I just feel broken. I want to follow my passion in TV writing, but was not emotionally supported in my past relationship to really pursue it. I have been writing a book now that has seemed to keep my head above water, but I do still feel very lost. There are a number of other things like debt I have accumulated that I have never had before. I have seemingly lost a lot of friends from my breakup, and feel alone. It is actually the first time in my life that I have been without a million people constantly surrounding me. I now go home at night, and write or hangout by myself. It has been an interesting feeling to which I have never experienced. I also quite drinking. Any advice?

  20. Your information is really inspiring me. I just had my 58th birthday and am ready for a whole new chapter! I have been studying spirituality, astrology and am an artist… I would love to get a reading from you. I didn’t see where you offer this on the website. Thank you! Mindy Beach

  21. Born Saturn (R) in Sagittarius in 1986, and this helped me understand why I feel like Saturn ran me over twice! I sat here with my mouth wide open, nodding in agreement the whole time.
    Thanks!

  22. I’m trying very hard to understand this… Lol I had a dream 2 was ago that I was.
. Actually on another planet and could turn to the right and see Saturn and it’s rings just as close as the sun is to us, if not even closer. I knew it was profound and I’ve simply been waiting for the knowledge sn9understanding of its meaning…. So coming across this article is in my mind, confirmation that I am in alignment with the vibrations of the cosmos….. But pls explain to me in more simpler terms if you would. I desire greatly to understand. For a few months I’ve been told by several different people that I am in a transit period that is rare and extremely important….. Based upon my birthchart
… BTW my birth chart is unusual in itself….. Every line is on one side of the chart. Dec. 12.19.1978….. 6:37 pm pls she’d some light on this for me. This website is the closest I’ve come to attaining the answers I seek…. *MbRs*♐???

  24. Hello, i don`t know if u are going to answer but …
I kinda really need your help … i m going to some very very hard times, i don`t even want to feel anything, because everything that i live for about 1 year is just pain.
Before this 1 year, i already had some difficult times like, my parents got divorce when i was 11 and my brother was 12.
On the 11th of november 2011, when i was living with my mom and brother, they sold the house without me knowing, and never saw them again, for money, i got a job that i loved (i`m a very hard working person, and i think this is the best of me), in 2013 i got married but got divorced 1 year later and finnaly split last year, after a long time relation, also last year i remarried an old boyfriend, that lives in another country, but i didn`t manage to settle easilly and returned 3 months ago in my home.
Also 2 months ago my father was diagnosed with cancer and got operation. I must say also that my father is my single relative left, since i don`t speak with my mother and her family.
This year i`m turning 28, but it feels like my soul is 70 years old, i feel like i`m a child that aged before time. I feel like i did some mistakes the last year.
My mind is very unclear, very stressed, i don`t know how to explain the feelling, but i hope time will pass and i will not lose my mind.
    I really hope for an answer …. my birth date is 23.8.1988 at 14:00 PM, coordinates 44 – 26 N, 26- 06 E.
My question is … can saturn be that hard for someone, when his returning.
    Thank you, good night …

    • I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve been having such a hard time. I’ve noticed myself that the way some charts are set up, there can be several very bad years in a row, while other people seem to get their “bad” scattered here and there. I have a cycle like yours, so I know what that’s like. Just when you think you hit bottom, you find a bottom below that bottom. I do have good news, which is that it sounds like you’re starting your Saturn Return and usually that brings traction for areas where you’ve had difficulties. Since you’ve been working so hard, I think you’ll find that finally some good things come your way. Hang in there. It will get better — and you get stronger, too.

  27. Hi – just wanted to let you know that the Thorwald Dethlefson book title is The Challenge of Fate. The Astrology of Fate was written by Liz Greene.

    • Thank you for taking the time to leave a note. I am still developing the content of the site, and there are a couple of issues we’re working through. ONe is that some of the articles were written by my mom, some were written by me, and some are a mix. I’m trying to figure out how to make the attributions clear. It was my mom who wrote that particular section, and I know she was a big fan of Liz Greene, but I think it’s clear there she means Dethlefsen’s book, so I changed the title. I appreciate you pointing out this discrepancy. Still, the more I read that paragraph, the sentence itself seems out of place, awkward.

  28. Hello Celestina!

How do we read about Saturn in Capricorn on your website-

It is not underlined nor are several others-

How do we access your amazing visions??

    Thanks!

    • Yikes. I sent you here and forgot I hadn’t posted the Capricorn stuff yet. I will get to it ASAP. Sorry, Barbara. We are still developing this one.

  30. Thank you, this seems to be right on target. At 28 I got sober, and have stayed sober since. I just celebrated my 60th birthday and my Saturn return, (in Sag.) is in full swing. I have been feeling very energized lately about my 2nd big phase with Saturn. I love using astrology with Saturn and the north node. And now with the aid of your “house” interpretation I am even more informed. Thank You,
    Rita

    • Hi Rita,
I am also a Sagittarius in my 2nd Saturn Return

Would you mind sharing some of your resources and astrologists, if you have any names? I am looking for some.

      Thank You!

      Pam

  31. Your scholarship and sensitivity are impressive. The Mr. Roger’s story was especially beautiful. I was taught to read both sun and ascendant sign forecasts for a full picture. Does this also apply when reading about Saturn Return?

    • Thank you for the note. Full credit to the original author of the Mr. Rogers story for his sensitivity and writing. In regardings to the Saturn Return, of course you need the whole chart to really do a good job of interpretation. Even just knowing the house placement — in addition to the sign — would add a lot of nuance. Transits can be a big deal, too. For example, there was may be some heavy duty transits going on while your Saturn Return is happening, and this can create a helpful or more stressful environment.

  32. When you’re lonely, I wish you Love!When you’re down, I wish you Joy!When you’re trloeubd, I wish you Peace!When things seem empty, I wish you Hope!Have a Happy New Year!

  33. Dear Celestina – I feel I could benefit from your helpful insight regarding my upcoming second Saturn return. Please let me know more about your procedure for arranging a reading. Thanks much.

    • Janet, I’m currently on hiatus from readings. Thank you for expressing an interest. I wish you the best in your upcoming Saturn Return and feel to write me directly with any specifics questions you have which I might be able to help with.

  34. I have looked and looked again I was born in 1960, maybe I am not understanding the dates and returns, Please tell me what sign my Saturn returns are in I don’t see 1960 anywhere?

  35. I have completely changed my life this year. Ended a relationship, sold home, left my job, bought new car and furniture. Then travelled to Anerica for a month. A lady I spoke to last week in a park told me I was a classic example of Saturn Return. It took no strength to do it all. I woke up New Years Day and decided to do it all. I could not have done this even a year ago. I’m living on my own for the first time in my life and I’m loving it. I was always afraid of it

and I am impressed with your Saturn Return web pages. I googled about 10 sites and you were much more in depth! Thank you so very much. I’m begining the 2nd return and your site is extremely helpful. I feel more educated by your data. Thanks again.

    Good Work & Good Day!
